Bad Habits That You Need To Break

Bad habits, they're not something we like to admit we have. But let's face it, we're human and we all have them. It's best to own up to our bad habits and try to put them behind us. Most of the time, we wait until the New Year so we can make a resolution to fix our bad habit.

But why wait? When we notice a problem starting to form, why don't we try to stop it before it gets worse? If we all want to live happier and healthier lives it's time to start making a change for the better. So here are some popular bad habits and some ways to fix them.

Smartphones: While they are very useful and helpful, some of us have become way too dependent on them. But we don't need to be on them 24/7, especially if we're out with friends. Next time you're with a friend, put the phone down, and enjoy the conversation.

Snacking + Bad Diet: Especially when you're not hungry, snacking can be very bad for you. Snacking can lead to overeating and can add a couple pounds to your figure. If you want to lose weight, stop the unnecessary snacking. Yes sometimes we eat when we're bored, instead try channeling that boredom to do something productive. As humans, we have a tendency to eat fast food instead of preparing a healthy meal at home all because of convenience and laziness. Also it doesn't help that healthy food can cost more than junk food. Eating healthier food is a great lifestyle change and can lead to weight loss and prevent diseases. It's okay to indulge every once and a while, but definitely not everyday. Look at your local grocery store's weekly ad to see what's on sale that week and shop accordingly! There's always specials on the healthy stuff!

Bad Budgeting: Sometimes we spend out money on frivolous things. And other times we just don't watch how much money we spend. Today, we spend so much money! Higher education puts a lot of people in debt with those pesky student loans. Paying off student loan debt is already hard enough, why add to it with frivolous spending? So why not create a budget, and limit your spending? If you have a savings account, why not use it? All your money doesn't need to go into your checking account, and with your money in your savings account you can make some interest. When I was working at my office job, I'd get two checks a month. I would put one check in my checking account and then I'd put the other in my savings so that way I had some money saved up. Also try not to use your credit cards, especially if you can't afford to pay them back.

Overthinking: It's something that plagues us all. Sometimes overthinking can create problems that did not even exist to begin with. It's always good to think a situation through before you act, but never obsess over every little detail. Take every moment slow and steady and follow what your gut is telling you. You'll find yourself much happier if you do!

Drinking Excessively: A cocktail is great every once and a while, if you're of age of course. But if you're getting intoxicated every day, you're not doing your liver any favors. Instead of drinking to get drunk, drink for flavor. Enjoy a nice adult beverage with your meal, that way you'll drink a little bit slower and savor the taste. Also consume a healthy amount, there's no need for three drinks a day. The recommended amount per day is one drink for a woman and two drinks for a man. Drop this habit early before a problem occurs and your liver will thank you.

Smoking: Let's get one think straight, anything that you burn and inhale is not good for you. PERIOD. Smoking is bad for your lungs and bad for the planet. The second hand smoke adds even more pollution to our already polluted air. Try nicotine gum and patches to get your craving instead. It can be tough to quit, but with a strong enough support system by your side you can do it.

Don't wait until the New Year to start bettering yourself, why not start today? It's never too late to start breaking your bad habits. If you have more than one bad habit that you need to stop, it is best to focus on one at a time. Let's break those bad habits, and make ourselves better. I'll be breaking my bad habits by not overthinking, being more financially responsible and cutting down on all the snacks. What bad habits do you want to break? Until next time.
